Background The incidence of depression in elderly patients with diabetes is high. Early psychological intervention is of great significance for clinical prognosis. Whether group recall therapy can improve the mental health of elderly patients with diabetes has rarely been reported in the past. Objective?S To investigate the effects of group reminiscence therapy on depressive symptoms, cognitive function, and quality of life in elderly diabetic patients with mild-to-moderate depression. Methods?S Eighty elderly diabetic patients with mild-to-moderate depression were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group (40 cases each). Both groups received routine diabetes treatment. The control group underwent mental health education, while the observation group received additional group reminiscence therapy interventions (once weekly for 8 weeks). The Hamilton Depression Scale-24 items (HAMD-24) was used to assess depressive symptoms before and after the intervention. Cognitive function was evaluated using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), Verbal Fluency Test (VFT), and Stroop Color Word Test (Stroop). Quality of life was measured using the Generic Quality of Life Inventory-74 (GQOLI-74). Results?S Post-intervention, the observation group showed significantly lower HAMD-24 scores than the control group (PS< 0.05). The observation group also demonstrated higher scores in WCST-correct response percentage, WCST-conceptualization level percentage, VFT correct responses, and Stroop correct responses (PS< 0.05). Additionally, the observation group exhibited superior improvements in psychological function, social function, material life, and overall GQOLI-74 scores compared to the control group (PS< 0.05). Conclusion?S Group reminiscence therapy can alleviate depressive symptoms, enhance cognitive function, and improve quality of life in elderly diabetic patients with mild-to-moderate depression.
