      Objective To find out the current situation and problems of mental health institutions construction and development through comparing and analyzing the mental health resources of Chengdu between 2012 and 2017. It was aimed to provide references for the development of the mental health systems, human resources and services allocation. Methods From January to March 2018, the questionnaire of mental health resources in Chengdu was adopted to investigate the beds, human resources and proceeding situation of mental health medical institutions of Chengdu in 2017. Results In 2017, there were 60 mental health institutions providing psychiatric health services with 4503 authorized inpatient beds( 3.14 beds per 10 000 people), which indicated an increase of 43.73% and 17.60% respectively compared with 2012. The number of actual beds was 9 647 (6.65 per 10 000 people) with an increase of 82.09% and 47.12% respectively compared with 2012. In 2017, there were 677 psychiatric doctors (4.71 per 100 000 people) and 1 511 psychiatric nurses (10.53 per 100 000 people) in mental health institutions in Chengdu increased by 2.17% and 5.94% respectively compared with 2012. In 2017, a total of 792 874 outpatient patients and 43 981 inpatients were received in the psychiatric department of Chengdu with respectively increase of 76.09% and 78.08% compared with 2012. On average, each psychiatric practitioner had an annual burden of 1 171 outpatient clinics and 65 inpatients with respectively increase of 40.75% and 41.30% compared with 2012. Conclusion Compared with 2012, the number of mental health institutions in Chengdu has increased in 2017. The number of psychiatric open beds has been able to meet the medium demand. The amount of psychiatric medical services increased significantly, but there is no significant increase in psychiatric medical staff.
