Objective To analyze the awareness rate of severe mental illness related knowledge among patients and their families under the community management in Zhanjiang, so as to improve the disease awareness rate and guide management of community service. Methods In this study, 481 patients with severe mental illness in three hospitals of Zhanjiang from March to October 2018 and met the International Classification of Diseases, tenth edition (ICD-10) were selected by cluster sampling method. Meanwhile, 481 family members were also enrolled. A self-designed questionnaire was used to investigate the disease awareness status, knowledge acquirement channels, and awareness rate of all selected subjects. Results The awareness rate of mental health related knowledge of patients and their families was 64.5% and 65.8%, respectively, with no significant difference (P>0.05). The awareness degree had significant difference between patients and their families, and the families had a better understanding than the patients (P<0.01). The knowledge acquirement channels of both patients and their families were mainly hospitals, accounting for 92.3% and 92.7%, respectively. Conclusion At present, patients and their families in Zhanjiang have a low awareness level of severe mental illness related knowledge, and community service is not the main way for them to acquire the knowledge.
